Following the midnight bell: A visitor's guide to Hanshan Temple
Updated: Apr 28, 2026 China Bound

"Outside Gusu city, from Hanshan Temple, the midnight bell's sound reaches my boat." With the poem A Night-Mooring near Maple Bridge by Zhang Ji (715-779) adding poetic charms, Hanshan Temple is known as one of China's 10 most celebrated Buddhist sites. A visit here offers a perfect blend of poetry, spirituality, and cultural charm.

Must-See Highlights
Screen wall at the west gate (西门照壁): A signature photo spot with temple name "Hanshan Temple" (寒山寺) inscribed on the bright yellow wall — perfect for light-colored and modern Chinese-style outfits
Bell Tower (钟楼): Strike the bell (5 yuan/$0.75 for three strikes) and experience the poetic "midnight bell sound" said to dispel worries.
Stele Corridor (碑廊): Featuring calligraphy steles of the famous poem mentioned above by master calligraphers of the past dynasties, with the one written by Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) scholar Yu Yue (1821-1907) being the most famous
Puming Pagoda (普明宝塔): The highest point in the temple. You can walk clockwise for blessings and enjoy the carved inscriptions around the pagoda.
Hanshi Hall (寒拾殿): Dedicated to the Two Immortals of Harmony and Union, a popular spot to pray for love and family harmony
Maple Bridge Scenic Area (枫桥景区): A free area outside the temple where you can walk across the iconic ancient bridges and relive the poetic riverside scene

Feed the koi: Buy fish food (10 yuan) near the Puming Pagoda and enjoy a relaxing moment by the pond.
Transcribing sutra: Copy Buddhist scriptures for free in a setting for a calming, meditative experience.
Souvenirs: Buy prayer bead bracelets and other cultural items (40-60 yuan) at temple shops.
