Tax Refund
Updated: Apr 21, 2026 China Bound

Planning to shop for silk, handicrafts, or designer goods in Suzhou? Good news — international visitors can get part of your money back thanks to China’s departure VAT (value-added tax) refund policy. With a bit of planning, you can turn your shopping into extra savings.

Suzhou is best known for its elegant gardens and refined cultural heritage, but it’s also a rewarding place to shop — from traditional crafts to modern goods. With tax refunds available — and even instant options at select stores — you can enjoy the experience knowing you’re getting more value from every purchase. A little preparation goes a long way: shop, explore, and make sure to claim what’s yours before you leave.

What is the tax refund program?
Suzhou participates in China’s departure VAT refund program, which allows eligible overseas visitors to reclaim VAT on purchases made at designated stores.

As of late 2025, there were 98 registered tax-refund stores across Suzhou and its surrounding county-level cities, including Kunshan, Zhangjiagang, Changshu, and Taicang.

Where to shop (and get refunds easily)
Not all stores offer the same level of convenience. Some support “instant tax refund” (即买即退) — meaning you can receive your refund right at the store instead of waiting until departure.

Confirmed stores offering this service include:

  • Suzhou Matro Depaent Store (美罗百货)
  • Suzhou Jiuguang Department Store (苏州久光百货)
  • Bicester Village Suzhou (比斯特苏州购物村)
  • Changshu Yaohan Department Store (常熟八佰伴)

Opening hours: Vary by location (typically around 10 am-10 pm — check individual malls in advance).

How much do you need to spend?
To qualify for a tax refund:

  • Minimum purchase: 200 yuan ($29.30)
  • Must be spent in the same store, on the same day

How “Instant Tax Refund” works
If you shop at a store offering instant refunds, the process is simple:

  1. Make your purchase and request a tax refund
  2. Complete a credit card pre-authorization (a temporary hold)
  3. Receive your refund on the spot

At the airport when you leave China:

  • Customs officers will verify your items and documents
  • Once everything checks out, the pre-authorization is released and the process is completed

This means you don’t have to wait until departure to get your money back — great for cash flow during your trip.

What happens at departure?
If you didn’t use instant refund:

  • Present your passport, receipts, and purchased goods at the airport customs counter
  • After verification, your refund will be processed through the designated agency

Tip: Keep items unused and in original packaging for a smooth inspection.
