Getting Here
Updated: Apr 17, 2026 China Bound

Set in eastern China at the heart of the Yangtze River Delta, Suzhou is one of the country’s most accessible cultural destinations. Located right next to Shanghai, the city is seamlessly connected by high-speed rail — making it an ideal getaway for international travelers looking to experience classical Chinese gardens, canals, and refined local culture.

Here’s how to get there smoothly, no matter where you land in eastern China.

Arriving from abroad: Your main gateway is Shanghai

Most international visitors fly into either:

  • Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA)
  • Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG)

From either airport, Suzhou is just a short onward journey.

Option 1: High-Speed Train (Fastest & Most Convenient)

China’s high-speed rail network makes reaching Suzhou quick and comfortable.

From Hongqiao Airport (SHA)

  • Distance to Suzhou: 80–100 km
  • Travel time: 20–40 minutes
  • Best part: The airport is directly connected to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station

✈️ If you arrive at Terminal 2, you don’t even need to leave the airport complex — just follow the signs:

  • Walk 15 minutes, or
  • Take the free airport shuttle train to the railway station

From there, frequent high-speed trains run to:

  • Suzhou Railway Station 苏州站
  • Suzhou North Railway Station苏州北站

From Pudong Airport (PVG)

This is Shanghai’s main international hub, offering the widest range of global flights.

  • Distance to Suzhou: 133–140 km
  • Travel time: about 2 hours (metro + high-speed train)

Suggested route:

  1. Take the metro from Pudong Airport to a major railway station (such as Hongqiao)
  2. Transfer to a high-speed train to Suzhou

Option 2: Airport shuttle buses (direct & simple)

If you prefer a direct route without transfers:

From Hongqiao Airport

  • Travel time: about 1.5 hours
  • Fare: 53–90 yuan ($7.50–$12.75), depending on drop-off point in Suzhou

From Pudong Airport

  • Travel time: about 3 hours
  • Fare: about 99 yuan

This is a good option if you have heavy luggage or want a straightforward journey.

Option 3: Taxi or ride-hailing (flexible but slower)

  • From Hongqiao Airport: about 1.5 hours, ride fare + 65 yuan tolls
  • From Pudong Airport: about 3 hours, ride fare + 90 yuan tolls

🚗 Convenient for door-to-door service, but can be affected by traffic — especially during peak hours.

✈️ Alternative airports near Suzhou
While Shanghai is the primary gateway, you can also consider nearby cities:

1.Sunan Shuofang International Airport (WUX)

  • about 27–30 km

How to get to Suzhou:

  • Airport shuttle bus: Multiple routes available, 30–40 yuan
  • Suzhou–Wuxi Bus Line 1: Budget-friendly option, 2 yuan, 80 minute

This is the closest airport to Suzhou, making it a convenient alternative if you find suitable flight options, especially for domestic or regional travel.

2. Changzhou Benniu International Airport (CZX)

  • about 120 km
  • Recommended: airport shuttle bus + metro

3. Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH)

  • about 160–170 km
  • Recommended: direct airport shuttle bus

4. Nanjing Lukou International Airport (NKG)

  • about 190 km
  • Recommended: metro + high-speed train, or shuttle bus + train

Travel tip: Why high-speed rail is the best choice
If you’re short on time, the high-speed train from Shanghai Hongqiao is by far the easiest and fastest way to reach Suzhou. It’s convenient, punctual, luggage-friendly, and remarkably efficient — often faster than traveling between city centers in many countries.
