Hidden in Yan’an, Shaanxi province, Ganquan Canyon is a natural wonder sculpted by water and time over millions of years. Its winding passageways, towering red sandstone walls and flowing curves create a surreal landscape that feels almost otherworldly, with shifting shades of crimson, rust and orange revealing the intricate patterns of erosion.

Ideal for: Adventure seekers, art-inspired travelers, and photography enthusiasts drawn to natural forms and colors.

Best time to go
Visit around midday after rainfall, when sunlight brings out the sandstone’s rich colors and patches of green moss stand out against the red rock.

Don’t miss
Wander through Huashugou’s narrow gorges: Follow narrow, winding passages between towering sandstone walls, where twists and turns create a maze-like landscape. Look up to see slivers of sky framed by the cliffs.

Capture canyon’s otherworldly form: Photograph the sculpted curves and rippling rock textures, using the interplay of light and shadow to create dramatic compositions.

Look for green moss after rain: Patches of vibrant green vegetation contrast with the reddish sandstone, adding another layer of color to the rugged landscape.

Take your time with the details: Beyond the sweeping canyon views, look for intricate erosion patterns, layered rock textures and narrow crevices shaped by nature over millions of years. Each turn reveals a different composition, making this a rewarding destination for landscape photography enthusiasts.
