Best time to visit
Summer (June-September): The alpine meadows are at their lushest, while the cool climate makes Nanshan an ideal summer escape. Sunrise and sea-of-clouds views are also more likely during this period. However, UV levels can be high, so be sure to protect yourself from the sun.

1. Climb Ziyang Peak for a 360-degree panorama of grasslands
As a landmark of Nanshan, Ziyang Peak is one of the best spots for sunrise, sunset, morning mist and sea-of-clouds views. From the summit, you can take in the wind turbines, meadows, cattle and sheep all at once. At night, the peak also offers an excellent vantage point for stargazing and viewing the Milky Way.
2. Walk along the Maoping Lake boardwalk and enjoy the tranquility of an alpine lake
At an altitude of about 1,800 meters, Maoping Lake is a clear alpine lake that mirrors the blue sky, wind turbines and surrounding mountains. Take a leisurely walk along the boardwalk to enjoy the peaceful scenery away from the crowds. Camping and picnicking are also available by the lake.
3. Wake up early at Dayakou to watch the sea of clouds sweep across the meadow
If your schedule allows, get up early and head to Dayakou. Mist rises from the valleys as the first rays of sunlight spread across the sky, creating one of the most spectacular natural scenes in Nanshan.
4. Experience milking cows at Banliping
At the Banliping Ranch, you can learn how to milk cows with local herders and taste fresh milk straight from the farm. This hands-on experience is especially fun for families with children and offers a rare glimpse into authentic ranch life.
5. Try Nanshan roasted whole lamb and fresh milk
The locally raised black lambs are slow-roasted whole over charcoal until crisp on the outside and tender inside. Freshly boiled milk and yogurt are rich and creamy, making them must-try local specialties in Nanshan.
Before you go
What to wear: Temperatures can vary significantly between day and night. Even in summer, nighttime temperatures can drop to around 19 C, so bring a light jacket for warmth and wind protection. UV radiation can be strong, so a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential.

Getting there:
By public transportation: Take a high-speed train to Shaoyang Railway Station, then head to Shaoyang East Bus Station and take a long-distance bus to Chengbu North Bus Station. Buses run from 8 am to 5 pm, with departures every 40-60 minutes. The journey takes about three hours and costs around 70 yuan/person. From Chengbu North Bus Station, take a taxi to Chengbu South Bus Station (about 10 minutes), then take a minibus to Nanshan Ranch. Two buses depart daily at 10 am and 2 pm. The journey along winding mountain roads takes about two hours and costs around 20 yuan/person.
By car: Search for “Nanshan Ranch” (南山牧场) or “Chengbu Nanshan” (城步南山) in your navigation app. The mountain roads are narrow and winding, so drive slowly and watch out for cattle and sheep crossing the road.
