CHINA EXPERIENCE
Ever dreamed of stepping into a Chinese period drama? At Hengdian World Studios in East China’s Zhejiang province, you can turn that idea into a short on-screen adventure. Dressed in an elaborate traditional costume, let professional makeup transform your look, and walk onto grand sets modeled after ancient streets and historic scenes. Suddenly, you're no longer just watching a story — you're part of it.
For 388 yuan ($54), the experience includes costumes, makeup and a personalized storyline, giving you the chance to act out your own mini-drama on set. The full experience takes about 50-70 minutes, including 20-30 minutes for makeup and 30-40 minutes for costume changes and filming. Follow the script, improvise a little, laugh through the retakes and enjoy the thrill of seeing yourself on screen. Whether you play the romantic lead, a heroic character or the villain, it's a fun and memorable way to experience China's film culture from the inside. At Hengdian, the sets aren't just for sightseeing — they're your stage.
Choose your story and character
There are 17 story outlines to choose from, covering genres including costume drama, Republican-era drama, palace intrigue, espionage and martial arts. Pick a storyline that suits your interests and style.
A private-customization option is also available as one of the core filming experiences. The script and filming experience can be tailored to your needs, with the price depending on the specific script and customization.
From costume styling to filming
The experience begins with costume and makeup styling. Choose from a selection of period costumes and complete your look with traditional hairstyles and accessories.
Once you’re dressed for the role, it’s time to onto the set. Hengdian's extensive filming facilities recreate historical streets, palaces and traditional residences, providing the backdrop for your scenes.
Before filming, professional directors will guide you through your lines, movements and cues. Then it's your turn to perform. Follow the director's instructions, deliver your lines and work through the scene alongside your friends or fellow participants.
Don't worry if you forget a line or laugh during a take. Retakes and the occasional blooper are part of the fun — and often make the finished video more entertaining.
Take home your own cinematic memory
Your performance is recorded on video, allowing you to relive the experience long after your visit. Share your mini period drama with friends and family, or simply keep it as a unique souvenir of your trip to Hengdian.
For anyone curious about China's film and television culture, the experience offers a playful way to go from watching Chinese dramas to actually appearing in one.
When to go
Hengdian has a sub-tropical monsoon climate with a rainy season generally from April to June and a typhoon season from July to September.
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are generally good times to visit. Spring temperatures typically range from 15 C to 26 C, making it comfortable to explore the outdoor sets in traditional costumes. Greenery and flowers also provide a good backdrop for photos.
Autumn brings crisp, clear weather and less rainfall, making it equally ideal for sightseeing and taking photos in costume.
Tips for a smoother experience
1. Go on a weekday
Weekends are generally busier. If you're hoping to see large-scale outdoor costume-drama filming by professional production crews, keep in mind that schedules vary and such filming is generally not arranged during public holidays.
2. Book ahead
Reservations can be made through the official WeChat mini-program and the official flagship stores on Taobao and Tmall. Book at least one day in advance, and further ahead during peak travel periods.
3. Keep expectations realistic
This is a visitor experience rather than a professional film production. Packages include the script, director and finished video, with makeup and costume styling available as an option. Commercial film and TV productions require separate registration with Hengdian Film & Television Management Department.
4. Allow extra time if you need language support
Foreign visitors can take part by registering with their passports. Staff can communicate in basic English, but a dedicated interpreter or translation device is not included. If you need full bilingual instructions throughout the filming process, arrange an interpreter in advance or prepare a translation app on your phone.
