Sanfo Pavilion (Three Buddhas Pavilion)

Constructed during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), this is the rear hall of Zhenguo Temple. The lower level consists of three arched brick cave chambers, with a corridor built along the front. Above stands a large timber hall housing the Ming Dynasty sculptures of Trikaya, or the three bodies of the Buddha. The three main Buddha sculptures are seated in lotus position on a sumeru pedestal and painted gold. On both sides of the main figures stand four attendant bodhisattvas with slender, elegant forms. There are 52 pieces of murals on the interior walls, originally created in the Ming Dynasty and repainted during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), while still preserving their original appearance. The murals, in a continuous narrative format, depict the life of Shakyamuni from birth, renunciation and enlightenment to nirvana.
