Shanmen (Hall of Heavenly Kings)

Inside Shanmen stand statues of the Four Heavenly Kings, so it is also known as the Hall of Heavenly Kings. It measures three bays wide and three bays deep and has a single-eaved gable roof. It was built in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). Although it has been repaired many times, its bracket set forms and structural characteristics still retain the Yuan style, such as the entasis used on column tops, protruding pupaifang architrave plate between the column tops, and the use of bold angled bracket arms and robust architraves in the central bay. The statues of the heavenly kings inside were made in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and repainted in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
