Yanliao Guild Hall Theater
Tucked away in a historical hutong, Yanliao (Pigment) Guild Hall offers visitors an immersive introduction to traditional Chinese opera, folk culture and hands-on experiences, all set within a well-preserved historical complex with a history of more than 400 years. Originally established by pigment and tung oil merchants from Pingyao, Shanxi province, it reflects the role guild halls once played as cultural and social hubs in old Beijing.
Visitors can watch immersive stage productions inspired by everyday life in old Beijing, including Teahouse, Old Door Gods: Memories of the Southern City and The Auction in Beijing. To enhance accessibility for international audiences, selected Peking Opera performances are presented with English subtitles, and guided introductions are available to explain key stories, characters and cultural symbols before the show.
Just steps away, this hutong is also home to the former residence of Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang (1894-1961), making the area a meaningful stop for opera lovers.
Beyond performances, this venue includes reading and dining spaces and offers hands-on intangible cultural heritage activities, providing an easy and engaging way to experience Beijing’s living traditions.
