Curious about how the murals and painted sculptures of the Mogao Caves were created? You can find answers at the Mogaoli Craftsman Village. Founded in 2018 by Du Yongwei, a master of Dunhuang painted sculpture, the village appears modest and rustic at first glance, but reveals a rich cultural world within.
Its exhibition spaces trace the legacy of Dunhuang artisans, showcase crafts of intangible cultural heritage, and present works by contemporary artists. Under the guidance of professional instructors, you can try your hand at mural copying, painted sculpture crafting, paper cutting, mineral pigment grinding, and other hands-on workshops inspired by Dunhuang themes. The journey continues at the Du Yongwei Art Museum and surrounding studios, where art lovers gather to create, exchange ideas, and experience Dunhuang culture as a living, hands-on tradition.
