Similar to the British immersive play Sleep No More, Encore Dunhuang is Northwest China's first large-scale immersive indoor situational experience drama. Located within 5 km of Dunhuang Mogao International Airport, the theater is easily accessible and an ideal stop for travelers new to Dunhuang to learn its profound history.
Breaking away from traditional seated viewing, the audience is guided through shifting historical scenes to literally walk into Dunhuang's past. Listening to the stories of six narrative figures, you can trace millennia of glory and hardship — from Zhang Qian's journey to the Xiyu (Western Regions), to the discovery of the Library Cave in 1900, and Chang Shuhong's lifelong dedication to protecting the Mogao murals. Vivid and deeply moving, the performance directed by Wang Chaoge brings Dunhuang's history to life in a way that is immersive and unforgettable.
