Would you like to watch a grand performance in an open-air theater with Mingsha Mountain as its natural backdrop? The Dunhuang Grand Ceremony makes this vision come true.
This large-scale live-action desert performance tells a moving love story between Moding, a young painter of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), and an imperial princess sent to the Xiyu (Western Regions) for an alliance. Set in Dunhuang, a key hub on the ancient Silk Road, the show unfolds across multiple acts, blending Buddhist themes with universal human emotions. It highlights iconic Dunhuang elements, including flying apsaras, together with ancient music and dance.
The production is full of technical marvels : the audience seating rotates 360 degrees and moves forward and backward, while folk traditions and dynamic dances such as "molten iron fireworks", the Huadian Ballad, and the spectacular Sogdian Whirl dance (Huxuan wu) light up the desert night.
