Set aside an afternoon — or better yet, an evening — to explore Shichahai, Beijing's historic lakes district in the heart of the old city. Centered around three interconnected lakes — Qianhai, Houhai and Xihai — the area combines tranquil waterfront scenery with centuries-old hutongs, traditional courtyard homes, and lively streets where local life unfolds at its own pace.
As you wander through the maze of narrow hutongs, you will see that many lanes eventually open onto the lakeshore. There, pedal boats drift across the water, willows line the banks, and restored siheyuan (traditional courtyard houses) and old brick walls peek through the greenery. Residents still cycle through the hutongs, fish along the shore, chat beneath the trees, or, on hot summer days, even take a refreshing swim in the lake — offering a glimpse of everyday life that has continued here for generations.
Stay until sunset, and Shichahai takes on a different character. As the sky darkens, teahouses, cafes, restaurants and bars begin to glow, their lights shimmering across the water. The crowd shifts from daytime sightseers to evening strollers, friends gathering over tea or drinks, couples enjoying the lakeside breeze, and musicians performing in some of the waterfront venues. There's no choreographed light show or nightly performance — just one of Beijing's most atmospheric neighborhoods easing naturally into the evening.

Best time to go
Open year-round, Shichahai offers a different experience in every season. For the classic lakeside evening atmosphere, 5 pm to 9:30 pm works best from late spring to early autumn (roughly May to October). In winter, the lake freezes over — head there during daylight hours if you want to try the ice skating.
