Why go | A city shaped by peonies
Many cities claim a signature flower. Heze in Shandong province has built an entire culture around one. When Tunisian traveler Samar Kerkeni arrived expecting a pretty garden, she found peony motifs on her hotel walls, woven into the carpet underfoot, and even on her plate. "There are peony elements everywhere," she said — and she wasn't exaggerating.
Heze's uniqueness lies not just in its horticultural depth — with over 1,300 registered varieties, and more than 1,000 developed by modern local growers — but in how deeply peonies shape daily life. More than a thousand years ago, Tang Dynasty (618-907) poets were already celebrating the flower. "Only the peony is the true beauty of the land," wrote Liu Yuxi (772-842). That reverence endures today. In 2012, the China Flower Association officially named Heze the "peony capital of China."
Who it's for | A spring destination with broad appeal
Heze is ideal for flower lovers, photographers, and anyone curious about Chinese cultural traditions. It also suits travelers looking for a more immersive, experience-driven trip, where you can not only see the flowers, but taste, wear, and engage with them in daily life.
Best time to visit | A month of blooms
The best time to visit is April, when the blossoming season unfolds in stages. Heze's tree peonies (mudan) bloom first in early April; herbaceous varieties (shaoyao) follow a few weeks later, stretching the season into a monthlong celebration.
This short window makes the experience even more special—miss it, and you'll have to wait another year.
What to do | Beyond flower viewing
1. Caozhou Baihua Garden (曹州百花园)
Walking through Caozhou Baihua Garden, visitors can see vast fields of blossoms, discover rare varieties such as the much-talked-about green peony, and even encounter centuries-old plants dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911).
Visitor tip:
Admission: 50 yuan ($7.30) per adult; evening ticket: 20 yuan.
Opening hours: 8 am–9 pm daily; evening visits start from 6 pm. Evening activities are held outdoors and may be adjusted or canceled due to weather conditions or maintenance.
2. Peony cuisine
Beyond sightseeing, Heze offers a multi-sensory experience. Try fresh petal salads, stamen tea harvested within 48 hours of pollen maturity, as well as pastries and wine infused with blossom essence. Eating the flower is as much a local tradition as viewing it.
3. Wearing a peony crown
Sold for around 10 yuan ($1.45), each crown is made from a dozen blossoms in full bloom. Put one on and, as Kerkeni put it, "you feel like spring follows you everywhere."
4. Peony beauty & wellness
From seed oil soft capsules to petal-based skincare such as moisturizers, serums, and handmade soaps, a thriving local industry has grown around peony extracts. These make meaningful and authentic souvenirs.
Good to know | Practical tips
Bloom periods may shift depending on weather, and popular sites can get crowded during peak season, especially on weekends. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. While peony-themed products are widely available, prices vary, so it is best to buy from established producers with clear sourcing.
